 Summary / Résumé

The cardiovascular system serves to carry essential compounds to the tissues and to remove metabolic by-products.
It also plays an important role in maintaining homeostasis, and functions directly or indirectly in the regulation of body temperature, oxygen supply, nutrient distribution, water and electrolyte balance, and endocrine activity.
Consisting of a pump, connecting tubes, exchange membranes and blood, this system is governed by a diverse and complex array of regulatory mechanisms, encompassing central neural, autonomic, endocrine, paracrine, and autocrine control.
Drugs used in the treatment of cardiovascular disease are disseminated widely in western industrialized countries.
In the US alone, nearly $18 billion was spent on drugs for the treatment of cardiovascular disease and stroke in 1999.
This Handbook contains records for all the major drugs that directly affect the cardiovascular system.
Monographs are provided for over 1900 cardiovascular agents.
For each main entry, the following information is provided: the chemical name and a list of proprietary names and synonyms; the Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) Registry Number; the European Inventory of Existing Commercial Chemical Substances (EINECS) number; and the Merck Index (12th edition) number.

Relié 710 p.
25x17 2005
80,00 EUROS ( 524,77 FF)

 Summary / Résumé

WEHRENS Xander H.
T., MARKS Andrew R.

Hardback 322 pp.
2005
EUROS 126,55 ( FF 830,11 )

 Summary / Résumé

Drs.
Xander Wehrens and Andrew Marks have gathered the collected wisdom of scientists that have devoted their working lives to the study of ryanodine receptors.
In this series of brief, but informative, chapters, the contributions progress from the basic gene family and primary structure, through its 3D structure so far, to its regulation and physiology.
The book ends with several chapters on mutations in the receptor that causes disease and their role in adaptation to disease.
There are interesting new developments in the control of ryanodine receptors by accessory proteins, the latest of which is the proposed role of leaky RyR channels in causing delayed after depolarizations, a cause of lethal ventricular arrhythmias.
The series of reviews in Ryanodine Receptors: Structure, Function and Dysfunction in Clinical Disease will bring anyone rapidly up to speed in current progress in the field, as well as highlight remaining questions.

ECG PATHOLOGIQUE : DE LA THEORIE A LA PRATIQUE, 140 TRACES (COLL.
DE CARDIOLOGIE PRATIQUE)
DE ROY Luc, BROHET Christian, RENARD Marc
Broché 256 p.
16x24 2005
29,00 EUROS ( 190,23 FF)

 Summary / Résumé

TRANSCATHETER VALVE REPAIR
BONHOEFFER HIJAZI
Hardback 400 pp.
19x25 2005
EUROS 185,60 ( FF 1217,46 )

 Summary / Résumé

Transcatheter Valve Repair discusses all aspects related to percutaneous and established valve repair methods.
The book is divided into few major sections covering all four valves and other topics.
Each section contains several chapters discussing everything related to that valve.
Beginning with the pulmonary valve, since it was the first valve to be tackled in the catheterization laboratory, and then moving to the aortic, then the mitral and then finally end with the tricuspid valve.
1.5M US citizens alone have some degree of aortic valve stenosis, with half (750K) requiring aortic valve replacement.
Aortic valve replacement, on the whole, is performed by surgeons, requiring bypass machines and technicians, as well as the usual operating team.
The operation is expensive and occupies a considerable amount of operating room time.
Mostly, the aortic valve is calcified and the usual option available to patients is valve replacement with a variety of choices, ranging from porcine valves to synthetic, for which there are many manufacturers.
It should be noted that the aortic valve is the most problematic of valves.
Percutaneous procedures are the answer.
The bottom line is that given the growing elderly population, many more patients will require valve repair, thus increasing health care costs with not only surgical operations but also hospitalisation.
Percutanous valve repair, whilst requiring a cath lab team, does not involve bypass machines nor extended hospitalisation.
Like percutaneous transluminal coronary artery interventions (PTCA) has replaced coronary artery bypass grafts (once the golden standard), and now stenting having replaced PTCA and its balloons.
We now see drug eluting stents replacing ordinary stents (though at a much higher cost.
There will be a huge movement toward percutanous valve repair, which should presumably cut costs but also morbidity and mortality.

The Pulmonary Valve.
Embryology/Pathology of the pulmonary valve both in stenosis and regurgitation: Pulmonary Regurgitation.
Assessment of the pulmonary valve with magnetic resonance imaging.
Hemodynamic evaluation of pulmonary valve disease and Indications for repair/replacement of the valve.
Hemodynamic Evaluation of Pulmonary Valve Disease:Indications for Repair, Replacement and Valvuloplasty.
Impact of emerging technologies in cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery- Percutaneous pulmonary valve implantation.
Established techniques for repair/replacement of the pulmonic valve: Small intestinal submucosa-a new generation of valve replacement.
Available Transcatheter pulmonary valves: Perventricular Technique with Shelhigh valve.
Available transcatheter pulmonary valves- Bonhoeffer valve.
Extending the present limitations and indications of percutaneous pulmonary valve replacement to small patients and large ventricular outflow tracts.
The Aortic Valve.
Embryology/Pathology of the aortic valve in AS and AR.
Aortic Stenosis: Pathophysiology, clinical, and echocardiographic manifestations.
Hemodynamic Evaluation of aortic valve disease and Indications for repair/replacement.
Impact of new percutaneous techniques of aortic valve replacement on cardiology/cardiac surgical practice.

MATHEMATICAL MODELLING THE ELECTRICAL AC TIVITY OF THE HEART : FROM CELL TO BODY SURFACE & BACK AGAIN
PULLAN Andrew J, CHENG Leo K, BUIST Martin L
Hardback 448 pp.
2005
EUROS 91,50 ( FF 600,20 )

 Summary / Résumé

This book on modelling the electrical activity of the heart is an attempt to describe continuum based modelling of cardiac electrical activity from the cell level to the body surface (the forward problem), and back again (the inverse problem).
Background anatomy and physiology is covered briefly to provide a suitable context for understanding the detailed modelling that is presented herein.
The questions of what is mathematical modelling and why one would want to use mathematical modelling are addressed to give some perspective to the philosophy behind our approach.
Our view of mathematical modelling is broad — it is not simply about obtaining a solution to a set of mathematical equations, but includes some material on aspects such as experimental and clinical validation.

HEART FAILURE : MOLECULES, MECHANISMS & THERAPEUTIC TARGETS, (NOVARTIS FOUNDATION SYMPOSIUM, N°274)
NOVARTIS Foundation
Hardback approx.
15x23 2006 not yet published
approx.price..EUROS 143,95 ( FF 944,25 )

 Summary / Résumé

Over the past five years, there has been dramatic progress in unravelling the cellular circuitry involved in cardiac failure, as well as in normal cardiac growth, development and apoptosis.
These studies have revealed new and unanticipated therapeutic targets in the heart.
In addition, recent advances in understanding the role of stem cells in cardiac repair have suggested strategies for cardiac repair and regeneration once thought impossible.
This book brings together investigators working on basic mechanisms of cardiac growth, function and dysfunction, along with those searching for novel therapeutic strategies for cardiac disease.
The discussions in this book always return to the same basic problem: how to use new data from the biological studies to design novel therapies for the treatment of cardiac dysfunction following myocardial infarction, cardiac hypertrophy, hypertension and other stresses.
